The history of the Internet
THE FACTS
The History of the Internet
In 1983, ARPANET started using the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) open networking protocol suite. In 1985, the National Science Foundation Network was designed to connect university computer science departments across the US.
Communications on the internet were significantly enhanced with the creation of HTTP in 1989, which allowed different web pages to connect to the same internet site. In 1993, the Mosaic website was developed.
The Internet is always expanding and evolving. For instance, Internet Protocol version 6 was specifically designed to accommodate the future massive expansion of available IP addresses.
In a related development, the Internet of Things (IoT) is an emerging environment in which almost any entity or object can be given a unique identifier (UID) and the ability to automatically transfer data over the Internet.
